When all the sugar mills in the country are closing down one after another due to losses, Darshana Carew & Company (Bangladesh) Ltd. is earning huge profits despite providing huge revenue to the government. In the fiscal year 2024-25, Carew & Company has achieved the highest profit by breaking all records since its establishment.

Despite covering the government’s revenue of 140 crores and the sugar factory’s loss of about 62.5 crores, a profit of 129 crores 54 lakh 74 thousand taka was achieved, which has broken all records in the 88 years since Carews establishment.

 

Meanwhile, Md. Rabbik Hasan FCMA told the discussed voice that various steps have been taken to make the Carew Sugar Mill factory more profitable. Sugarcane cultivation using modern technology can reduce the burden of losses in the sugar factory in the coming threshing season to a large extent.

Established in 1938, Carew & Company has crossed 88 years of age. The sugarcane threshing season is started repeatedly with a bang. The sugarcane threshing process is completed somehow by digging a little. Officials and employees are constantly suffering due to mechanical faults. However, the distillery factory is in a different situation. Because the distillery department of the mill and other 5 units have broken the all-time record by giving 140 crore taka revenue to the government and covering the losses of the sugar factory and earning a net profit of 129 crore 54 lakh 74 thousand taka, the authorities said.

In this regard, the Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation has also been quite honored. On Friday (September 26), the sugar mill’s accounting department said that in this fiscal year, the distillery department produced 25,220 ketchups of foreign liquor, 24,89,000 proof liters of CS country spirit, and 21,000 liters of vinegar, with a current market selling price of Tk 190.26 million.

Profits of Tk 36.9 million were earned from commercial farms, Tk 30.2 million from experimental farms, Tk 78.36 million from biofertilizer factories, and Tk 520 million from pharmaceuticals.

Carew Managing Director Md. Rabbik Hasan FCMA said that Carew & Company has been able to earn a net profit of Tk 129.44 million after paying Tk 140.36 million to the government for revenue and VAT on manufactured goods and covering Tk 62 million in losses at the sugar factory.

Regarding the losses in the sugar factory, General Manager (Factory) Suman Kumar Saha said that the 88-year-old mill factory is in a dilapidated condition due to its age. The work of BMR of the factory is ongoing. Once the work is completed, the workers and employees will start working with new enthusiasm. The losses will reduce.

In this regard, General Manager (Agriculture) Mr. Ashraful Alam Bhuiyan said that all efforts have been made to cultivate sugarcane with advanced technology, companion crops with sugarcane and planting sugarcane with high sugar content.

General Manager (Distillery) Rajibul Hasan said that production has been increased through automation in the distillery department and sales have increased due to the use of state-of-the-art bottle-type processing, resulting in a hefty profit.

The Managing Director of the sugar mill, Mr. Md. Rabbik Hasan (FCMA), said that this is the first time since the establishment of the Carew Complex in 1938 that the company has seen a huge profit, which has been possible with the contribution of the local people, concerned officials and employees, sugarcane farmers and the well-wishers.

He said that Carew & Company, the only economic driving force of the southwestern region of the country, has no alternative to cultivating more sugarcane to see more profit.
